Update | Canada adheres to the Apostille Convention: what does it entail?
On January 11, 2024, the 1961 Hague Convention, also known as the Apostille Convention, officially entered into force in Canada. The Convention simplifies the process of legalization of foreign documents, providing for the direct recognition of documents apostilled by the competent authorities in the country of origin of the document.
Canada deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention on May 12, 2023, a few months after the ratification by China, for which the Convention entered into force on November 7, 2023.
The entry into force of the Apostille Convention undoubtedly facilitates the use of official documents originating from the aforementioned jurisdiction, with a material reduction in terms of timings and formalities.
