Insurance obligation against catastrophic risks: recent updates

The obligation for businesses to take out insurance against catastrophic risks (such as earthquakes, floods, and extreme weather events) is now official. The requirement was originally introduced by the 2024 Budget Law.
The rule applies to all companies registered with the Italian Business Register and with either their legal or permanent establishment in Italy, excluding agricultural businesses. Deadlines for compliance vary depending on the size of the company.
The newly approved text also clarifies:

  • which business assets must be insured,
  • how to calculate the insured value,
  • and the option for corporate groups to take out a single group-wide insurance policy.
